The Adventure of Hiking in New Zealand

Looking for a place to escape to snow and ice, but still want to get all the outdoor excitement you can handle? How about a trip below the equator to scenic New Zealand? This neighbor to Australia has mountains, beaches, forests, and lakes for you to explore. Hiking in New Zealand offers something for everyone!

Located in the southwest Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands, both of which feature volcanoes and glaciers. If you’ve ever seen the Lord of the Rings films, you’ve seen some of what this beautiful land has to offer, as much of the epic tale was filmed there.

Take an Alpine Tour

Wandering through the mountain wilderness of Mount Aspiring National Park, walk alongside rushing rivers, through serene meadows, and even a rainforest! You can stroll the shores of a glacial lake at the foot of Mount Alba and take a boat ride down the Wilkin River. Guided tours through this area include tents and provisions so you don’t have to pack your own, just your personal gear and sleeping bag. Tours last three to four days.

Go Native with a Kiwi-Style Hike

If you want to really see the real New Zealand, take part in a Kiwi-style hiking adventure. These rugged adventures are far from civilization and consist of a mix of multi-day hikes with some road tours through different National Parks. Campsites are basic, offering either huts or even sleeping out under the stars. Hiking group members will work together to pitch camp, cooking, and collecting firewood. Participants should be able to handle long walks and carry their own pack.

See it All…Literally!

For the ultimate New Zealand adventure take the Auckland to Queensland walking tour. You’ll hike across both islands from north to south taking in unique sites like the Waitomo glow worm caves, the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park, and the lush green of Punakaiki’s rainforest. Soaring mountain peaks greet you as you near the end of your journey through Mount Aspiring National Park. Participants on this two week tour should expect 4-5 hours of walking per day.

Summer comes to New Zealand in December-February, when temperatures range from 70-90 degrees. Fall weather (March – May) has temps from 50-70 degrees. Take advantage of warm “winter” weather and plan a trip of a lifetime hiking New Zealand!
