The Social Media Travel Experiment: Dan Does Peru

peruviansSocial media has taken the world by storm, and it no longer resides in the realm of computer-obsessed shut-ins. While more and more people are realizing the value of cultivating a social media presence, there are some who are using truly creative ways to engage their audience and make their business so much more than just a company. One of the greatest examples comes from Australian travel insurance company Cover More.

Cover More Travel Insurance ran a contest on its Facebook page entitled “Essence of Travel”, wherein contestants submitted photos that they though captured the essence of any journey taken, either alone or with friends. The winner was up-and-coming Australian travel video blogger Dan Moore, whose photo featured himself, his sister, and his brother-in-law atop the Les Arenes in Nimes, France, originally constructed in 70 AD.

Since winning the $2,000 travel voucher prize from Cover More Travel Insurance, the company and Moore worked together to come up with brilliant social media scheme: let the fans of Cover More’s Facebook page vote to decide where his next journey would take him. Not only that, but fans would also be voting on the activities he would participate in while there, such as eating bull testicles to hiking a volcano.

So the fans voted, and Dan Moore was on his way to Peru to allow fans of Cover More Travel Insurance to live vicariously through him and follow his travels throughout the country on their Facebook page. Moore filmed the entire journey with a GoPro, and the images he recorded of this amazing outdoor adventure certainly give meaning to the phrase, “the essence of travel.” Check it out here.
