Depending on which part of the country you’re from, you either know how to layer, or you don’t. Even if you live in a warm weather climate and have no intention of exploring the colder reaches of the world, it’s still crucial to know how to layer for cold weather!

Base Layer

Because the base layer will be in direct contact with your skin, you’ll want something that is lightweight and comfortable. Merino wool and synthetic fabrics are a great choice for base layers, as they tend to be ultra-soft, moisture-wicking, and quick drying. Your base layer does not have to be long sleeved, or even have sleeves at all. A tank top, shorts, or various styles of long underwear will all suffice for a base layer, as long as they contain these important properties.

Mid Layer

Natural materials and fillers like down and fleece are perfect for the mid layer, as this is the layer that will absorb body heat and keep it trapped in for insulation. The weight and thickness of your mid layer will depend primarily on the activity and climate you’re setting out for. Obviously very cold climates will call for a heavy mid layer, but it might not be ideal if you are planning on a lot of physical activity. Consider both of these factors when choosing your mid layer.

Outer Layer

The outer layer is what makes the first two layers count, so choose something that is wind and waterproof. A jacket that provides a bit of ventilation will ensure that the evaporative properties of your base layer work efficiently and air circulates properly for a consistent temperature. Just as with the mid layer, the level of insulation you want your outer layer to provide is dependent on the climate you will be facing, but too much insulation in your outer layer can make it difficult to achieve an optimum internal temperature when weather patterns change erratically from sun to snow to wind to rain.

By using a layering system, you’ll have the power to shed or add layers as the weather demands, providing the perfect insulation no matter what conditions lie ahead. Equipped with the knowledge on how to layer for cold weather, you’re ready to hit the trail (or step outside in Chicago).
