Candles aren’t generally at the top of people’s packing list for outdoor adventures, but a citronella candle can go a long way in ensuring you aren’t the blue plate special for any number of insects found in nature. But if pack space and overall safety are concerns for taking a citronella candle on a backpacking trip, we think this video tutorial will kill both those birds with one stone. All you’ll need is a metal screw top container, easily found at an outdoor supply or army surplus store, some citronella tea lights, a strip of cardboard at least as tall as your container, a heat gun or blow dryer, and a container to melt the wax in. When you’re finished, you’ll have a lightweight, easy-to-store backpacking candle that will keep the bugs away on any camping trip!
