The state of Colorado has some of the most amazing and beautiful scenery in the country. One of the best places to observe this scenery and enjoy the outdoors is at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison contains one of the most scenic and dramatic sections of the Black Canyon. It is located in Montrose County in the western part of Colorado. The Black Canyon itself was carved by the Gunnison River, which can be seen running at the bottom of the gorge. The national park is 30,750 acres in size, with 12 miles of the 48 mile long Black Canyon running through it. The downstream remainder of the canyon is in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, while the upstream portion runs into the Curecanti National Recreational Area.
The incredibly steep slopes of the Black Canyon are mostly made up of the rocks schist and gneiss. These rocks are generally brown, gray or reddish in color. However, because the canyon is so narrow and the sides are frequently shielded from sunlight, the walls of the canyon often appear to be black, giving the canyon its name.
Many wild animals make their homes in and around the Black Canyon, and within the national park. The many native plants, such as sagebrush, scrub oak and juniper, as well as larger trees including ash and Ponderosa pines, create a lush habitat for many species. Animals such as mule deer, elk and coyotes can be frequently spotted within the park. Birds such as wrens, magpies, peregrine falcons and great horned howls can also be seen near the canyon.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a hotspot for nature lovers and those who enjoy spending time outdoors. The park has several camping areas. Visitors to the canyon can also enjoy hiking or, for the more daring adventurer, rock climbing. The park is also an excellent choice for those who enjoy spotting wildlife or bird watching.
