Despite most bears’ well-earned reputation as fearsome man-eating beasts, they are not generally just prowling around in search of the next human snack. Bears are solitary creatures, engaging in social behavior only during courtship, or when mothers are rearing their young. They are remarkably intelligent, with a demonstrated capacity for learning and memory. Although they can be somewhat of a nuisance to farmers, ranchers, and campers, bears have a tendency to look awfully playful and cute when they think no one is watching.
