Photographing the many different things there are to see in the great outdoors can be incredibly rewarding. Nature photography will only be successful if the right techniques are used to capture a moment exactly as it happened. Here are a few tips to help you get that perfect photograph.

When attempting nature photography, the most frustrating aspect can be unplanned movement from wind, necessary movement, or other factors. It can be difficult to always carry a tripod to every outdoor location, but there are several light-weight solutions available for those who want to.

Take Advantage of Autofocus

While there have been plenty of examples of amazing nature photography taken in the past century without it, autofocus can be a life saver in certain situations. One scenario that comes to mind is attempting to capture wildlife without having much time to properly calibrate the camera settings. While not as important for scenic photographs, it’s nice to have.

Prepare Yourself

This tip is especially useful for taking photographs of deer, birds, and other easily-startled wildlife. Finding a spot to stop, be out of sight, and unobtrusive is paramount to capturing the perfect wildlife photo. Find a spot that is likely to have some animal action and begin focusing the camera for that area. Being patient is another important preparation tactic.

Shoot Liberally

The key to capturing that perfect picture is to take lots of photographs. Even the professionals don’t just point and shoot a single snapshot with successful results, so why should you?

Get in Close

With these simple tips even a novice photographer should have the ability to create some professional level nature photography. The most important rule is to never give up, no one knows when that perfect photograph is going to come.
