5 Survival Uses for Pantyhose

While pantyhose may seem like little more than women’s garments, the sheer nylon and spandex material is actually a great resource to have when it comes to survival. Hunters have even used pantyhose as a secret weapon to ward away bugs and other skin irritations while making their way through the woods. Here are five survival uses for pantyhose to keep in mind in case you should ever find yourself in a survival situation.

1. Catching Food

Pantyhose can act like a net to trap fish and crustaceans from rivers, streams, and lakes, giving you vital protein for survival. Simply pull the hose around the forked end of a branch and plunge it into water. If you catch only small fish, you can save them as bait for bigger prey, using the hose to dangle the bait.

2. Keep Bugs at Bay

Pulling pantyhose over exposed skin is an effective way to prevent stings and bites, which can be crucial in areas where biting insects like ticks or chiggers carry infectious disease. Pantyhose can also provide a barrier between you and leeches or jellyfish in the water. However, while pantyhose can serve as a makeshift mosquito net, wearing it on your skin will not prevent mosquitoes from piercing through.

3. Water Filtration

You cannot survive without water, but impurities in the water can endanger your health. Before drinking from an unfamiliar water source, filter the water through a pair of pantyhose. This is perhaps one of the more important survival uses for pantyhose, as dirty water can make you sick and dehydrate you if it leads to vomiting and diarrhea. It is important to note that pantyhose will only filter particulates from the water; you will still need to boil it to get rid of parasites and bacteria.

4. Dust Blocker

Pantyhose provides a great barrier to dirt, dust, and sand, while still allowing you to see and breathe freely. Simply tie the hose around your head so it covers your eyes, nose and mouth. This trick is especially useful on windy days when you are more likely to be exposed to flying debris.

5. Prevent Blisters

Perhaps one of the lesser known survival uses for pantyhose is that it can keep your feet free from blisters, which are not only painful but can lead to infection. Simply pull over your feet before putting shoes on, under socks if you have them. This will prevent your shoes from irritating your skin during prolonged walking, especially when maneuvering on rough, uneven terrain.
