Where can you go when you want to get away from it all…how about up? Pull yourself out of a rut with these high altitude camping destinations in California. You won’t need an oxygen tank, just a healthy sense of adventure and a good pair of hiking shoes.

1. Horseshoe Meadows Campground

Starting at the top, Horseshoe Meadows is at a soaring 10,560 feet. You will immediately look to vivid slices of snowy mountains thrusting upwards through rolling foothills. Located on the western side of the Inyo National Forest, this campground has access to nearby Mt. Langley, the 9th tallest peak in California.

2. Rock Creek Lake Campground

With lakes nestled in between mountain peaks, Rock Creek Lake campground offers shaded tent sites as well as RV sites. This pristine camping spot is at 9,600 feet and has great trout fishing alongside its stellar views of the Sierra Mountains. Hike the Tamarack Trail by day, and relax under a starlit expanse at night.

3. Grandview Campground

Grandview Campground is located in Inyo National Forest, about four hours north of Los Angeles and near the Nevada state line. With an elevation of 8,600 feet, you’ll enjoy grand views of this rugged desert environment. Tent camping is permitted and a thick blanket of stars will envelop you nightly.

4. Tuolumne Meadows Campground

There are over 300 campsites available at Tuolumne Meadows, some of which allow horses for those who want to ride the trail. Fishing, hiking, climbing and kayaking are just a few of the relaxing activities you will enjoy here. The elevation is 8,600 feet. There are spectacular views, as well as rivers and even a waterfall.

5. Whitney Portal Family Campground

Like a welcoming relative, Whitney Portal provides firewood, fire grates, restrooms, and piped water. Tents and RVs are allowed, and some spots can be reserved in advance. At an elevation of 8,000 feet you’ll have the opportunity to relax in the shadow of snow capped peaks and aside quiet lakes. Be on the lookout for wandering bears. However, bears know this area, so be cautious and store your food supplies in the provided bear boxes.
