Honeypot ants are a choice insect for anyone who happens to be wandering aimlessly in Australia. They are very distinctive, their bodies similar in appearance to a regular, black ant with the exception of an abdomen that is extremely swollen. The abdomen looks like a golden honeypot, giving the insects their name. The nectar inside is meant to feed the other ants but will work for people too when in a pinch.

Believe it or not, but bees can make a meal as well. Whether the insect is roasted or the larvae is cooked up as a dish, expect quite a buzz at meal times with these honey producers. While humans are often the victims of their sting, people can bite back and put food in their bellies in a time of need.

If it happens to be the warm season when the cicadas are out, it’s easy to find a gold mine of insects to eat. Find these noisy bugs just after they molt and they are supposed to be quite delectable. Large populations live in the eastern portion of the United States, making them easy to find. They’re also common in Asia.

Crickets are another popular option because they are so common. They can make the next meal and mean a full belly instead of laying awake listening to the chirp that keeps a person up all night. Take a look around the globe to see how many countries treat crickets as a delicacy.

Dragonflies are another possibility when there is a need to get by. They are found in abundance by water in warmer climates. They can be fried up in a pan or tossed in water to boil, taking the edge off hunger.
